Description

A unicorn cat paper doll and a mermaid cat paper doll in one set, both drawn and coloured by hand on paper before they were scanned. The Mermaid Cat is a green cat with a gold crown, a blue dotted top with a gold collar and a long scaly fish tail. The Unicorn Cat is a grey cat with a pointed horn and a yellow fringe, a pink top, a rainbow striped skirt and red ballet shoes laced up the legs. Print them, cut the pieces out, punch the marked dots and join them with small brads, and heads, arms, legs and tails move.

The unicorn cat paper doll and the mermaid cat, piece by piece

Fifteen brads hold the 17 pieces together, and the assembly guide on the last page of the PDF shows where each one goes. The Mermaid Cat bends at the tail, so she can swim upright or dive; the Unicorn Cat has jointed legs, so she can stand, point a toe or step out. The second photo shows each character in two poses.

Everything starts on paper. Each character was drawn and coloured by hand, then scanned, so the colour sheet keeps the look of the original drawing. The line art sheet is the same drawing with the colour left out: a child can colour the unicorn cat paper doll and the mermaid cat in her own colours before cutting, or you can print the colour sheet and start cutting right away. These are paper dolls of the old jointed kind, held together with pins, not folding tabs.

How to make it: print, cut, punch, assemble

• Print at 100% (Actual Size), not Fit to Page, on white card stock.
• Cut out each piece along its outline.
• Punch every marked dot; a dot marks a brad position.
• Align the dots of two pieces and join them with a mini brad. Repeat for all 15 joints.

• Sharp scissors or a craft knife
• A small hole punch or an awl
• 15 small paper brads (split pins)
