Description
This big bad wolf puppet printable is a free, hand-drawn articulated paper doll from our Three Little Pigs set. Print it, cut out the 13 pieces, punch 21 small holes and join everything with 9 brads. The ears, neck, tail, hips and knees all turn, so the wolf can prowl, sit, howl at the moon or sneak up on the pigs.
What you get
The big bad wolf puppet printable comes as four print-ready PDF files and a ZIP with SVG files, delivered as an instant download:
- Coloured version, A4 and US Letter: the wolf as we painted him, grey fur with a black nose and white teeth.
- Colouring version, A4 and US Letter: the same wolf as clean black line art, ready for pencils, markers or watercolour.
- Each PDF has three pages: a cover with the finished wolf, a full assembly guide with a numbered joint diagram and layer order, and the cut sheet at actual size.
- SVG cut sheets of both versions (A4 and US Letter) for people who prefer to work in vector software.
The wolf is about 25 cm (10 inches) long from nose to tail when assembled. Dolls, brads and card are not included, only the digital files.
A big bad wolf puppet printable that really moves
The wolf was drawn on paper, painted by hand and then scanned, so the fur keeps its pencil and brush texture. We split the drawing into a head, two ears, a body, a tail and four legs with knees. The two ears share one brad on the head, both front thighs share one brad on the body and so do the back thighs. That keeps the brad count low and lets you spread the ears into a V or swing the legs apart for a walking pose.
Compared with a stick puppet or a finger puppet, a jointed puppet can change its mood. Tilt the head down and he is sulking, raise the tail and he is pleased with himself. The three little pigs puppets are built the same way, so the whole cast of the tale can act together in a shoebox theatre.
How to make it: print, cut, punch, assemble
The big bad wolf puppet printable is made in five short steps. The full guide with a joint diagram is on page 2 of every PDF.
- Print the cut sheet at 100% (actual size) on white card. Both A4 and US Letter pages are included, so pick the one that matches your paper.
- For the colouring version, colour the pieces first. The finished wolf printed in the corner of the sheet is only a reference.
- Cut out the 13 pieces along the outer black outline.
- Punch a hole at each small round mark with a 3 mm hole punch or an awl.
- Join the pieces with 9 brads in the order shown in the guide: neck, ears, tail, front hips, back hips and the four knees. Keep the brads slightly loose so every joint turns freely.
You will need
- White card, about 160 to 250 g/m² (60 to 90 lb cover). Plain paper works for a quick test, but the joints wear out faster.
- Scissors. Small, sharp ones make the paws and the tail easier.
- A small hole punch (about 3 mm) or an awl.
- 9 small brads, also sold as split pins or paper fasteners. One pack of brads is enough for the big bad wolf puppet printable and the three pigs together.
The same materials are used for all our printable articulated paper dolls. If you are new to brads, the paper doll questions in our FAQ explain which card and punch to use.
Why is the wolf free?
We wanted one puppet that anyone can try before buying a set. Add the big bad wolf puppet printable to your basket and check out, no payment is needed. Checkout creates your DiNerija account, so the files wait for you under My account, Downloads, and you can print them again whenever a wolf gets lost.
Good to know
- This is a digital download. Nothing is shipped.
- Colours vary a little between printers, inks and paper.
- Cutting and punching are adult jobs for younger children, and brads are small parts.
- Licence: personal use and one classroom. Please do not share, resell or upload the files.
Printed versions of The Three Little Pigs go back to the 1840s, and the best-known telling is from Joseph Jacobs in 1890. Our wolf is a little vain, a little hungry and, we think, rather handsome for a villain.
