Description
An oversized doll sweater sewing pattern for 11.5 in fashion dolls such as Barbie® and 12 in male dolls such as Ken®: a cosy, loose sweater with dropped shoulders, a turtle collar, cuffs and a bottom band, in the photos in a contrast colour. Because the fit is roomy, the one pattern works on five 1:6 scale body types, Regular, Curvy, Petite and Tall female dolls and the male body, so one knit remnant dresses the whole shelf. Dolls and fabrics in the photos are not included.

One doll sweater sewing pattern, five body types
The sweater is cut loose on purpose. The shoulders drop over the arm, the body is wide, and the collar, cuffs and bottom band are folded double, so nothing sits tight on the doll. That is why the same pieces fit Regular, Curvy, Petite and Tall 11.5 in dolls and 12 in male dolls: the knit gives, and the loose cut takes up the differences in chest and height. The back closes with small hook-and-loop tape or snaps, so the sweater goes on without being pulled over the head. Sew the collar, cuffs and band in a second colour, as in the photos, or in the same fabric as the body.
Fits Regular, Curvy, Petite, Tall and male dolls
This doll sweater sewing pattern fits all four 11.5 in female bodies, Regular, Curvy, Petite and Tall, from one set of pieces; there are no separate sheets to choose from. The photos show it on Regular and Curvy dolls, on articulated bodies and on a male doll. The male fit was tested on the original Ken® body; the broad and the slim bodies have not been tested, so for those sew the first sweater in a cheap knit and check the chest before you cut the final fabric. Not sure which body your doll has? The Size Guide shows how to tell them apart in a minute.
Skill level, fabric and supplies
- Skill level: beginner. A sewing machine helps but is not required.
- Fabric: slightly stretchy, such as jersey, stretch cotton or a polyester knit. Avoid very thin, see-through knits for your first sweater, they are harder to sew.
- You need: the printed pattern, fabric, thread, scissors and small hook-and-loop tape or snaps.
- Seam allowance is included: cut on the solid line, sew on the dashed line, and trim the allowance after each seam to keep the small seams flat.
How it goes together
The sleeves are sewn on while the sweater is still flat, before the side and underarm seams are closed, which is the easiest way to set a sleeve at this scale. The sleeve ends, the collar and the bottom band are each folded in half lengthwise, pressed and sewn on as double bands, so no hem is needed on the cuffs, the neck or the bottom edge. The back seam comes last, with an opening left for the closure. Nine steps in all, each with a photo in the instructions.
Printing
Print the doll sweater sewing pattern at 100% (Actual Size), not Fit to Page, on A4 or US Letter paper, and check the 1 cm and 1 inch marks on the sheet before you cut. No printer? Open the PDF, zoom until the 1 cm line on screen measures exactly 1 cm, and trace the pieces through thin paper; a print shop can also print it at 100%. The SVG files hold the same pieces at real size for cutting machines and vector programs.
