A one-shoulder dress from two pieces
Each size in this doll maternity dress sewing pattern is one piece, cut twice as a mirrored pair. You stitch the front seam and the armholes first, then the first side seam, and hem the dress if you like: a knit that does not fray can stay unhemmed, and on a small doll dress one seam less looks less bulky. Next come the ribbons, pinned to the edges of the shoulder line and stitched 1 cm (3/8 in) from the edge; at this size you can also sew them on by hand.
The second side seam is stitched down to the slit notch, or all the way to the hem if you want the dress without a slit, and the slit edges are stitched for a clean finish. To finish, dress the doll from the feet up, tie the ribbons into a bow and trim the ends. In the photos the dress is sewn in cream rib knit with a brown ribbon on a Regular doll, and in beige knit on a Curvy doll.
Doll maternity dress sewing pattern for Regular and Curvy dolls
This doll maternity dress sewing pattern has two pieces to choose from: REGULAR DRESS for a Regular 11.5 in doll and CURVY DRESS for a Curvy one. The sewing steps are the same for both. Tall and Petite are not listed for this pattern. Why Regular and Curvy need their own pieces is explained in our article on clothes for Curvy Barbie® dolls, and the Size Guide shows how to tell the two bodies apart.
The dolls in the photos wear a belly attachment, which is not part of this pattern. If you would like to print one yourself, see our pregnant belly 3D print files. To sew a soft one from fabric, use our pregnant doll belly sewing pattern.
Skill level, fabric and supplies
- Skill level: beginner. Two pieces and short straight seams; a sewing machine helps, and the small pieces can also be sewn by hand.
- Two sets of instructions come with the doll maternity dress sewing pattern: the full step-by-step PDF with photos, and a short version for experienced sewists who only need the order of the seams.
- Fabric: stretch fabric only. Try the pattern on an old T-shirt or a pair of leggings before you cut your good knit.
- Stitch: a straight stitch works; a zigzag stitch gives a neater seam that stretches with the fabric.
- You need: the printed pattern, stretch fabric, matching thread, a hand sewing needle, ribbon long enough to tie a bow (ready-made or cut from any fabric), fabric scissors, pins, and a graphite pencil or vanishing fabric marker.
- Seam allowance, 3 mm, is included. Transfer the sewing lines A, B and C and the slit notch to the fabric.
Printing
Print the doll maternity dress sewing pattern at 100% (Actual Size), not Fit to Page. Both paper sizes are included, A4 and US Letter. Before you cut, measure the 1 cm and 1 inch calibration squares on the sheet with a ruler. No printer? Open the PDF, zoom until the 1 cm square on screen measures exactly 1 cm, and trace the pieces through thin paper; a print shop can also print it at 100%. The SVG files hold the same pieces at real size for cutting machines and vector programs.
