Three T-shirts from one male doll T-shirt sewing pattern
- Sleeveless: a round-neck vest top; in the photos in navy and white stripes.
- Short sleeve: the classic tee with short set-in sleeves; in the photos in rust jersey.
- Long sleeve: the same body with long fitted sleeves; in the photos in green knit.
All three share the same front, back and collar pieces; only the sleeves differ. Each T-shirt closes at the back with small hook-and-loop tape or snaps, so it goes on and off without stretching the fabric over the doll's head and shoulders. The sleeves are sewn on while the pieces are still flat, before the side and underarm seams, with the centre mark of the sleeve matched to the shoulder seam. The collar band is folded double and pressed before it is sewn on, and the hem is turned up and stitched with two parallel lines for a finished look.
Fits 12 in male dolls such as Ken®
This male doll T-shirt sewing pattern was fitted on the original 12 in Ken® body. Male dolls have been sold on several bodies over the years, and the broad and the slim bodies have not been tested; if your doll has one of those, sew the sleeveless style first in a cheap knit and check the chest before you cut the others. The stretch of the fabric takes up small differences. The female Regular, Curvy, Petite and Tall bodies are too different for this pattern; for them see our other patterns below. Not sure which doll you have? The Size Guide helps.
Skill level, fabric and supplies
- Skill level: beginner. A sewing machine helps but is not required; the seams are short enough to sew by hand.
- Fabric: stretchy, such as spandex or stretch cotton. Avoid thin, see-through knits, they are harder to sew. Leftover jersey from a worn-out human T-shirt is ideal: thin, stretchy and fine enough to look like fabric at 1:6 scale.
- Seam allowance, about 3-4 mm, is included: cut on the red cut line, sew on the dashed seam line, and trim the allowance after each seam to keep the small seams flat.
- You need: the printed pattern, fabric, thread, scissors and small hook-and-loop tape or snaps.
Printing
Print the male doll T-shirt sewing pattern at 100% (Actual Size), not Fit to Page, on A4 or US Letter paper, and check the 1 cm and 1 inch marks on the sheet before you cut. No printer? Open the PDF, zoom until the 1 cm line on screen measures exactly 1 cm, and trace the pieces through thin paper; a print shop can also print it at 100%. The SVG files hold the same pieces at real size for cutting machines and vector programs.
