Pregnant Barbie® Outfit Ideas: 5 Maternity Looks to Make

Once a doll has a baby bump, her usual clothes can feel tight at the front. These pregnant Barbie outfit ideas all go over a removable belly on an 11.5 in fashion doll such as Barbie®: two pants looks, a maternity dress, a free no-sew dress and a short top with shorts. Each look links to the pattern we use, and the table further down shows which doll bodies each one fits.

What works over a doll baby bump

Three things make an outfit comfortable on a pregnant doll. The fabric stretches, so the clothes go over the bump without pulling. There is room at the front: a belly panel in pants, darts in a top, or a loose cut that falls past the belly. And the closure sits at the back, or there is none at all, so nothing presses on the bump. The belly always goes on first, under the clothes.

If your doll does not have a belly yet, our guide on how to make Barbie® pregnant compares the sewn fabric belly with the 3D printed one.

5 pregnant Barbie outfit ideas

1. Flare pants and a strapless tube top

Our newest maternity set pairs wide flare pants with a strapless tube top. The pants have a belly panel at the front and pull on with no closure; the top has darts for the bump and closes at the back with hook-and-loop tape. Both are sewn in a very stretchy knit and come in one pattern, the doll maternity pants sewing pattern with tube top, made for Regular dolls.

2. Two colours, one set

The same set looks different when the top and the pants are cut from two knits. A dusty rose top over navy pants draws the eye to the bump, while one colour from top to hem, such as burgundy or deep teal, gives a long, tall line in photos.

3. A maternity dress with a bow on the shoulder

The doll maternity dress is a close-fitting one-shoulder midi dress in stretch fabric, with a ribbon bow on the shoulder and an optional side slit. Unlike the pants set, this pattern has separate pieces for Regular and Curvy dolls.

4. A free no-sew dress with a ribbon under the bust

Our free no-sew doll dress is cut and tied, with no sewing at all. Tie a narrow ribbon under the bust and it becomes a simple maternity dress. It fits Regular, Curvy, Petite and Tall dolls and is easy enough for children.

5. A short top with shorts

A short top that ends above the bump, worn with shorts or wide leg pants, leaves the belly showing and makes an easy summer look. Choose a top that stops above the belly, so nothing pulls over it.

Fabric for maternity doll clothes

Every sewn look in these pregnant Barbie outfit ideas uses stretch knit. Old T-shirts and leggings are a good place to start, and our sewing basics guide shows how to test whether a fabric stretches enough. For small seams in knit, see our ten tips for clean seams at 1:6 scale.

Questions about pregnant doll outfits

Can a pregnant doll wear her usual clothes?

Sometimes. Loose dresses and stretch tops can go over a small bump, but clothes cut for a flat tummy are often tight over a belly. Try them on over the belly first.

Do I need a sewing machine?

No. The pieces are small, and the maternity set, the maternity dress and the sewn belly can all be sewn by hand. On a machine, a zigzag stitch keeps knit seams stretchy. The no-sew dress needs no sewing at all.

Do these outfits fit a Curvy doll?

The maternity dress and the no-sew dress do. The flare pants and tube top are made for Regular dolls only.

Which belly should I use?

The maternity set is made to fit the belly sewn from our pregnant doll belly sewing pattern. With a printed belly or one from another shop the fit can differ a little, and a very stretchy knit gives some room.
