One long sleeve doll dress sewing pattern, many looks

The dress has four pattern pieces: back, front, sleeve and collar. It hangs straight from the shoulder to the hem, so it skims the body instead of hugging it, and that is why one set of pieces fits all four body types.

The trim goes on first, while the pieces are still flat: a placket down the front, the sleeve edges and later the hem, each topstitched in matching thread. Then the collar is sewn to the neckline with a decorative topstitch, the sleeves are set in with the sleeve cap matched to the shoulder seam, and the sleeve and side seam are sewn in one pass. The hem is folded twice and topstitched.

The back closes with small hook-and-loop tape or snaps. The pattern shows the tape along the full opening, but a strip of about 5-6 cm is enough to keep the dress closed and leaves less bulk; the seam below it is sewn shut. The photos show the dress in black, dark grey and navy with white lace, and in cream with a black ribbon placket and a braided tie bow; in the photos the sleeves end below the elbow.

Fits Regular, Curvy, Petite and Tall dolls

This long sleeve doll dress sewing pattern fits Regular, Curvy, Petite and Tall 11.5 in dolls from one set of pieces; there are no separate sheets to choose from, because the easy fit takes up the differences in hips and height. The photos show it on Regular and Curvy dolls. Why a dress that fits a Regular doll does not always fit a Curvy one is explained in our article on clothes for Curvy Barbie® dolls. Not sure which body your doll has? The Size Guide shows how to tell them apart in a minute.

Skill level, fabric and supplies

  • Skill level: beginner. Straight seams, one set-in sleeve and a back closure. A sewing machine helps but is not required.
  • Two sets of instructions: the full illustrated step-by-step PDF, and a one-page short version for sewists who only need the order of the seams.
  • Fabric: non-stretch woven fabric, such as light cotton. A stretchy fabric makes the dress come out bigger; if you use one, take the top edge in where the closure goes. If you like denim, choose a lightweight one to reduce bulk.
  • You need: the printed pattern, fabric, thread, scissors, small hook-and-loop tape or snaps, and lace or ribbon for the trim if you like.
  • Seam allowance is included: cut on the red cut line, sew on the dashed seam line, and transfer the notches and centre marks to the fabric.

Printing

Print the long sleeve doll dress sewing pattern at 100% (Actual Size), not Fit to Page, on A4 or US Letter paper, and check the 1 cm and 1 inch marks on the sheet before you cut. No printer? Open the PDF, zoom until the 1 cm line on screen measures exactly 1 cm, and trace the pieces through thin paper; a print shop can also print it at 100%. The SVG files hold the same pieces at real size for cutting machines and vector programs.
