Description
A doll wedding dress sewing pattern for 11.5 in fashion dolls such as Barbie®, Regular body: a close-fitting dress shaped with darts, with or without straps, and a long circle overskirt that turns the same dress into a wedding or evening gown. Sew the dress plain in a light woven cotton for every day, again in satin or brocade for a cocktail look, then add the overskirt in tulle or lace for the wedding. Three looks from one set of pieces. Dolls and fabrics in the photos are not included.

Three looks from one doll wedding dress sewing pattern
- The fitted dress: a strapless bodice shaped with bust darts, a cocktail-length skirt with darts that line up with the bodice darts, and a closure at the back.
- The strap option: the same dress with two thin straps sewn into the top seam of the bodice.
- The wedding or evening look: a long full-circle overskirt in two panels, layered over the dress skirt and joined with it at the waist seam. Sew it in tulle, organza or lace so the fitted dress shows through.
The photos show the fitted dress in black and white gingham and in textured gold fabric, and the wedding look with straps and the embroidered sheer overskirt. Change the fabric and the same doll wedding dress sewing pattern goes from a day dress to a cocktail dress to a bridal gown.
Fits Regular 11.5 in dolls
This doll wedding dress sewing pattern is made for the Regular 11.5 in body. It has not been tested on Curvy, Tall or Petite dolls, and a fitted dress with darts does not stretch to take up the difference, so make a quick test fit in a cheap fabric if your doll has another body. Why a Regular dress does not go on a Curvy doll is explained in our article on clothes for Curvy Barbie® dolls. Not sure which body your doll has? The Size Guide shows how to tell them apart in a minute.
Skill level, fabric and supplies
- Skill level: intermediate. Bust darts, skirt darts, curved edges, a narrow hem and a back closure, all at 1:6 scale. A sewing machine helps but is not required.
- Two sets of instructions: the full illustrated step-by-step PDF, and a two-page quick guide for sewists who only need the cutting list and the construction order.
- Fabric: lightweight non-stretch woven fabric, such as cotton, poplin or linen; satin or brocade for a special occasion; tulle, organza or lace for the overskirt. A stretchy fabric makes the dress come out bigger; if you use one, take the top edge in where the closure goes. If you like denim, choose a lightweight one.
- You need: the printed pattern, fabric, thread, scissors, small hook-and-loop tape or snaps, pins or clips and an iron.
- Seam allowance is included: cut on the red cut line, sew on the dashed seam line.
How it goes together
The bodice is two pieces, an upper band and a darted main piece, joined along the top edge; for the strap version the straps are sandwiched into that seam. The bust darts and the skirt darts are sewn from the wide end to the point and pressed, then the skirt side seams are closed, the hem edge is finished and the skirt is joined to the bodice at the waist with the darts matched. The closure goes on the back opening, and the back seam of the skirt is sewn from the hem up to about 1.2 cm below the waist, so the dress opens wide enough to go on.
For the wedding version the two overskirt panels get finished edges and are sewn into the waist seam together with the dress skirt; the back stays open for dressing, and a shorter closure keeps the layered back flat.
Printing
Print the doll wedding dress sewing pattern at 100% (Actual Size), not Fit to Page, on A4 or US Letter paper, and check the 1 cm and 1 inch marks on the sheet before you cut. No printer? Open the PDF, zoom until the 1 cm line on screen measures exactly 1 cm, and trace the pieces through thin paper; a print shop can also print it at 100%. The SVG files hold the same pieces at real size for cutting machines and vector programs.
